NSW:Man to face trial over Sydney police death

A man's been ordered to stand trial on a charge of manslaughter relating to the fatal
shooting of a Sydney police officer during a drug search.

Magistrate BRIAN MALONEY has today committed PHILIP NGUYEN to trial in the NSW Supreme Court.

The 55-year-old is charged with the manslaughter of Constable WILLIAM CREWS - a 25-year-old
trainee detective who died after being shot in a drug search in a basement carpark at
Bankstown in September last year.

Prosecutors told Burwood Local Court that the fatal shot came from a police colleague,
but NGUYEN faced the manslaughter charge on the grounds of excessive self defence.

NGUYEN has also been committed to trial on a number of other charges, including shooting
with intent to murder, possessing an unauthorised prohibited firearm, and knowingly taking
part in the supply of a prohibited drug.

The case has been adjourned to the Supreme Court for mention on March two.
